Breakouts for Sep 17th: The first pick, ELGX, first featured as a breakout on August 20th. The stock has not released news for this month that could account for the current rally. The weekly chart shows a close at new yearly highs following a lovely test of the 20-week exponential moving average. Daily technicals show a breakout in on-balance volume and a MACD crossover above the bullish zero line. The weak IBD rating is a mixed concern; fundamentally its now quite there, but this could be a chance to get in the stock early. Take your pick. Could be a sleeper hit. The second pick, GMST, has a horrid IBD rating, but is breaking from base, closing a breakdown gap from May and likely ending the week above both its 20-week and 50-week exponential moving averages. Daily technical strength is good, with a MACD crossover above the zero line and an on-balance-volume line which has started to tick up after months of flat trading. Short term, play to next resistance, but the favorable appeals court ruling could be the catalyst to set up a nice rally with a long term target of $11.50. The third pick, MDG, is in the precious metal sector which is in the midst of an intermediate correction. Long term, I remain bullish in this sector, but the current breakout remains vulnerable to further weakness in this sector. Certainly MDG is one of the better stocks in the mix. Recent accumulation has pushed prices to new closing highs and the momentum is there to push it further.
