Breakouts for July 20th: The first pick, VITX, is re-emerging from a spring slump on heavier volume. The initial spark does not look to have occurred on a specific news item (at least one I could see), but the volume starkly shows where the interest is. Tuesday marked a fresh breakout in on-balance-volume with a 'buy' trigger in the MACD line. I would look for a move to the next point of resistance before reassessing. The point-n-figure chart shows a triple top breakout from June 7th with a price target of $15.75. The second pick, JEF, is a typical high quality Investors Business Daily stock which moved on heavier volume following earnings. The point-n-figure chart shows a consolidation breakout as part of a double top breakout from June 13th with a price target of $56.00. The technical picture is more mixed: on-balance-volume is rising in favor of accumulation, but the 6-month picture looks flat; the MACD trigger line is above the bullish zero line, but has yet to break resistance; on the positive side, slow stochastics are strongly in bullish territory. Still some work to do, but the stock offers a low capital risk based on Tuesday's close. The third pick, LSS, broke from a 4-week handle on heavier volume, bringing with it an ascending triple top breakout with a price target of $75.00, on news of earnings. GTC buy orders to the high $48s should be good enough for fills (especially given the weak showing by the futures). On-balance-volume nicked a breakout, but the MACD trigger line is just shy of a bullish consolidation 'buy' signal. Short term traders should look for a measured move to $50.00.
