Breakouts for Jan 13th: As the markets pullback breakouts become rarer. All three stocks carry moderate IBD ratings and so are more vulnerable to breakout failure - even strong stocks like VIVO have problems maintaining breakouts in the current environment. The first pick, CYH, gapped up and over resistance on heavy volume. Black candlesticks do not represent bullish demand - so a pullback into the breakout gap is likely. GTC buy orders around $28.25 should be good for fills. Technicals are slowly turning bullish, on-balance-volume has breached resistance, but the MACD trigger line remains below 3 1/2 month declining resistance. Earnings are not due until Feb 22nd. The second pick, MYGN, breached 5-week resistance as the company announced plans to start a phase III trial for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. I have used the point-n-figure price target - leaving a relatively unattractive risk:reward return. GTC buy orders down to $23.20 would reduce the degree of risk in the trade, as would buying tomorrow's open and running a stop below $23.00. On the positive side, there is no overhead resistance. The MACD trigger line has yet to generate a "buy" signal, but it lies well above the bullish zero line. On-balance volume crossed its 20-day moving average but has yet to make new highs, while slow stochastics are rising but are not yet overbought. The third pick, BTRX, is very thinly traded - and has moved in irregular buying spurts. Patience is the best play here, using GTC buy orders to build a position (10-15 cents above support - c$18). Today's gains came on news of some promising results for a psoriasis treatment. The stock has excellent technical strength, led by new highs on-balance-volume and a break of resistance in the MACD trigger line. Point-n-figure targets suggest a $19.50 price target, so I have set a price target at the next psychological resistance level of $25.
