Breakouts for Dec 16th: Tread carefully here - the easy picks from August and September have given way to skittish behavior in November and December picks. The scan hasn't changed, but the way people treat breakouts has. The first pick, OPWV, gained on news of the Sprint-Nextel merger. The price breakout coincided with a perfect technical buy signal, although buyers may want to try to get fills around $15.25. The next point of resistance at $17.50 is derived from point-n-figure charts, beyond this there is no resistance. The second pick, ARIA, is a dual combination breakout; a triangle breakout and a new near term reaction high. The breakout gap on higher volume should hold, so stops should be placed just below this gap. The stock received fresh analyst coverage and was rated a buy. The company had elected a new president yesterday. Supporting the move in price is on-balance-volume at new highs, slow stochastics at overbought levels and a rising MACD trigger line above the bullish mid-line. The third pick, AXCA, first featured as a breakout on Jun 22nd but fell into a fresh base. Buys around $18.50 would be good value for GTC buy orders. Excellent technical strength, today's "buy" signal from the MACD trigger line is supported by a breakout in on-balance-volume and firmly overbought slow stochastics. The price target is drawn from point-n-figure target of $31.50.
