Breakouts for Apr 7th: The first pick, SMBI, breached resistance in the absence of company specific news. Decent technical strength led by a strong on-balance-volume pattern, although the MACD trigger line is mapping a bearish divergence and slow stochastics have moved out of the overbought zone. The stock is riding an ascending triple top breakout from March 23rd with no overhead resistance and a price target of $30.50. A solid play ranked highly by Investors Business Daily. The second pick, DDIC, is a low grade fundamental stock which is building the bottom of a new base. The company had filed its 10-K in early March but has been PR shy since. A move to $3.50 will set up a decent long side play on the point-n-figure chart for a move to $5.00. Technicals are led by new highs in on-balance-volume and a MACD trigger line holding above its bullish zero line. Speculative play. The third pick, ISRG, first featured as a successful breakout for July 12th at $19.48. The stock gained on rumors of short covering, but it is always dangerous to bet against the trend no matter how 'overvalued' the stock looks. On the contrary, the breakout looks a solid continuation move from February's surge and subsequent consolidation. Slow stochastics and the MACD trigger line have remained at the bullish end of the spectrum for nearly 6-months straight as on-balance-volume maps an accumulation pattern. The stock has moved well beyond its $29.50 point-n-figure projection so look to psychological resistance at whole numbers.
